Ravenna

Ravenna is one of the Italian cities included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, to deliver priceless treasures from the past to posterity.

The city, in fact, was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire at the behest of Theodoric, after the fall of the Roman Empire, and the successive emperors wanted to embellish it so as not to make it inferior to Byzantium – Constantinople.

Its churches – the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Sant’Apollinare in Classe, the Basilica of San Vitale – have walls decorated with the most beautiful and best preserved mosaics in the world, with pure gold tesserae and other precious stones representing scenes of life imperial.

The Mausoleum of Theodoric is the emperor’s family tomb, whose dome is made up of a single block of marble which, according to legend, was struck by lightning, guilty of the death of the emperor who was taking a bath in the tub marble of the noble floor
